Case Study: Home Office

A downtown Manhattan apartment with multiple rooms needing separation and each with different needs for privacy

Design Challenge

  • Separation of rooms from central corridor (bedroom, living room, study)
  • Differing levels of privacy needed
  • Ability to open when desired
  • Translucency needed for some but not all openings

Solution

  • 3 panel sliding walls that can open up entire rooms at will
  • Inserts with varying opacity for varying privacy requirements – from completely clear to opaque
  • Translucency where needed – most inserts allowed light to reach central (windowless) corridor
  • Gives apartment feeling of openness when walls are retracted, tying one space to next
